Used oil is hazardous waste – it contains toxic chemicals and heavy metals such as lead and cadmium that must be disposed of properly. Safe disposal is very important – these materials should never be put in the garbage or poured down the drain. Government regulations ban such practices in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Used Oil and Glycol Recycling Program ensures that residents can properly dispose of used oil including lubricating oil, crankcase oil, gear oil and transmission fluid.
Oil Retailers
Under the Provincial Used Oil and Glycol Recycling Program, residents can return used oil to oil retailers registered as a collection facility with the Used Oil Management Association. Collection facilities include mechanical workshops, car dealerships but also many regional waste management authorities.
