Single-use batteries, or dry-cell batteries, are considered hazardous waste since they contain toxic heavy metals and acids that can pollute the environment when disposed of in a landfill. The most common types are alkaline and zinc carbon batteries often used in flashlights and battery-operated toys. Once the power source has been drained, these batteries must be disposed of properly.
Labrador West Regional Landfill Site
The Towns of Labrador City and Wabush operate the Labrador West Regional Landfill which provides waste disposal services for residents and businesses in the western Labrador waste management region. This landfill has a public drop-off for garbage, bulk waste, scrap metal, household hazardous waste (HHW) such as oil, paint and batteries.
