Food waste is a type of organic waste material that will decompose or “break down” naturally over time. Some food waste can be composted using a backyard compost bin. Learn more about backyard composting.

In addition, there are many community composting programs. You can also dispose of food waste with regular garbage if composting is not an option in your region.

Businesses can hire a waste hauler to collect and compost food waste, where available.

Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) – Compost Program

MMSB has partnered with select communities throughout the province to offer compost bins to residents at a reduced cost. In addition, MMSB provides residents and businesses with public education resources on how to compost and how to build your own backyard compost bin.

Think About It

Organic waste represents as much as 30 per cent of the waste generated in the province.

When buried, organic waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas that has 21 times the global warming potential as carbon dioxide.

A compost bin helps turn this organic material into a valuable soil conditioner that is good for gardens and yards and most importantly, is the best method to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
