3Rs
Rethink Waste encourages Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to think and act differently about how we manage waste. With a little more thought, we can all take small steps to change our habits and reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our landfills. This means taking a closer look at ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle our waste before final disposal.
What is the Waste Management Hierarchy?
The waste management hierarchy (also referred to as the 3R Hierarchy) ranks our environmental actions based on greatest positive impact on the environment beginning with reduce, followed by reuse, recycle and then final disposal.
By reducing first, we avoid making waste in the first place. Reusing allows us to divert waste from the landfill by giving items a new life – or a new home. And recycling, helps us process used materials into new resources that can be used to make new products.
Guided by the Waste Management Hierarchy, Rethink Waste aims to increase awareness of and participation in sustainable waste management practices.
